New here? Start with our guide
If you are reading SAAK articles for the first time, start with Orphans in Nigeria: The Facts and How You Can Help. It sets out what Nigeria’s latest national survey and UNICEF report about orphaned and vulnerable children, and gives seven practical steps for helping safely. Our other articles build on it.
What you will find here
We explain the situation of orphans in Nigeria in plain language, using the most recent official data we can verify, and connect it to what SAAK does on the ground at Heaven’s Nest, our partner orphanage since 2010.
- Facts and data: what national surveys and UNICEF report about orphaned children, hunger, health and school in Nigeria.
- How to help: practical guidance on giving safely, checking a charity and choosing support that lasts.
- Stories from Heaven’s Nest: updates on the children’s home we have supported since 2010, told without sharing children’s private details.
- Our plans: progress on projects such as the SAAK Children’s Campus in Benin City, which is at the concept stage.

How we check our facts
Trust matters when you give, so everything we publish follows the same standards:
- Named sources. Every statistic links to the official page or report it comes from, such as UNICEF Nigeria or Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics.
- Dated checks. Each piece says when its figures were last checked.
- No unverified numbers. If a figure is widely shared but we cannot trace it to a current official source, we say so and leave it out.
- Children’s privacy. We do not publish individual children’s personal records.
- Plain facts about SAAK. What we say about our own work comes from our records and public filings, which you can review on ProPublica’s Nonprofit Explorer.

Why we share this information
Many people who want to help orphans in Africa are not sure where to start or whom to trust. Good information is the first step. We give you the facts in one place, show where each fact comes from, and explain how a gift to a small, transparent charity like SAAK reaches children at Heaven’s Nest. We also hope these pages help teachers, students, faith groups and anyone researching the needs of children in Nigeria.

Read, share and help
When you are ready to help, every gift supports children at Heaven’s Nest. It costs SAAK about $8 a day to feed one child. If you can, choose a monthly gift: children eat every day, and steady support lets our partner plan food and supplies ahead instead of waiting for the next emergency.
